Graduate Enrichment Fellowships

Award Information

• The goal of the Graduate Enrichment Fellowships is to provide academically excellent students the opportunity to quickly initiate their programs of study without the distractions of teaching or research responsibilities in their first year. The fellowships provide a single academic-year stipend of $16,000 plus a waiver of tuition. Fees are the responsibility of the student or student’s department.

• Fellowships are awarded to incoming Ph.D. or other terminal degree-seeking students based on academic merit and potential contribution to broadening the diversity of the university community and curriculum. For this program, “broadening diversity” refers to contributions of candidates to the cultural, ethnic, academic, or artistic diversification of the WVU community.

• Awards are for the academic year beginning August 16th and ending May 15th.

• Departments may cap awards to attain parity with departmental stipend levels, but Fellows should receive reduced teaching or research responsibilities in these cases.

Eligibility

• Students beginning study in a terminal degree program (Ph.D., Ed.D., M.F.A., etc.) in the general university are eligible.

• Applicants must hold a minimum of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university and be admitted to a doctoral or other terminal degree program at West Virginia University.

• Awardees are selected on academic merit. Students should have a GPA of 3.6 or higher and have scored competitively on standardized tests (GRE, Miller’s Analogy, etc.).

• Priority is given to U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

The application must include the following:

1. Personal statement from the applicant outlining long-range career goals, how your goals align with the spirit of the fellowship, and you will contribute to the WVU campus community, if funded.
2. Current Resume or Vitae
3. Copy of Standardized Test Scores (GRE, MAT, etc.)
4. Two letters of recommendation
5. College Dean approval signature

Selection Criteria

• The academic record and standardized test score of candidates will be the primary selection criteria.

• Priority will be given to applicants beginning doctoral study the succeeding fall semester.

• Consideration will be given to distributing awards among disciplines, but candidates of lesser quality will not be selected simply by virtue of their intended majors.

Renewal Procedure

This fellowship is not renewable.

Conditions of Fellowship

• All Fellows are required to be full-time, students in residence for the entire year: nine (9) credit hours each semester and a total of six (6) credit-hours in the summer.

• Doctoral fellows must maintain at least a 3.5 GPA and should perform at a level substantially exceeding the minimum expectations of the University.

• All fellows are required to complete a minimum of 40 hours of community service per semester.

• Failure to meet any of the conditions of the fellowship program may result in discontinuance of the award.
