Orientations

Graduate Teaching Assistant Orientation

To streamline the orientation process for new Graduate Teaching Assistants, the Office of Graduate Education & Life is implementing a hybrid orientation model:

Part 1: Online Modules on University Policies

  • FERPA
  • Academic Integrity
  • Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
  • Addressing Students’ Concerns

These modules will be available on the eCampus Learning Academy site beginning August 1 (directions will be sent in July). New GTAs should complete these modules by the beginning of the Fall semester (August 19, 2013). Completion will be monitored by the Office of Graduate Education & Life and reported to departments.

Part 2: Face-to-Face Orientation

  • Monday, August 12, 2013. 9:00a.m. – 12:00 noon.
  • Msing Hsieh Hall G121

New GTAs should attend the face-to-face orientation in addition to completing the online modules. This orientation will address topics such as Graduate Academy opportunities, advice from veteran GTAs, Title IX compliance, active shooter training, and student health insurance. Attendance will be monitored by the Office of Graduate Education & Life and reported to departments.

International GTA Orientation

An optional orientation for new International Graduate Teaching Assistants will be offered August 8, 2013, 8:00a.m.-4:00p.m. in Ming Hsieh 125.

This orientation for international teaching assistants will help you learn about the culture of the American classroom, prepare for teaching your course, and complete your SPEAK test. This orientation will take place August 8, 2013, with the opportunity to take the SPEAK test on the Friday or following Monday.

All international teaching assistants are required to pass the SPEAK test in order to begin teaching. Students who enroll in the orientation will receive mentoring from experienced teaching assistants, instruction from veteran university professors, and practice for the first day of class. Food will be provided, but students must find their own lodging.

For more information about the orientation, please contact Dr. Jenny Douglas, jenny.douglas@mail.wvu.edu, 304-293-0172.
